Today, I had the opportunity to meet a very successful filmmaker and producer, Akosua Adoma Owusu, a Ghanian woman whom inspires many people with her films. In my opinion, she is impacting the world as she shares stories about Africa in a way that most of us are not told. The right way! I was amazed with the realness of her short film My White Baby also known as Me Broni Ba. The message of this film to acknowledge how our African sisters are too struggling with self identity. “I began filming in Ghana as a way to find a place in my Ghanaian heritage. I often refer to myself as a Ghanaian-American, but I do consider myself to be an American filmmaker of Ghanaian descent. When I am in America, I feel very Ghanaian and when I’m in Ghana, I feel more American. I started traveling to Ghana with my friends from America to help me with the trauma of dealing with blackness both in Africa and in the African diaspora. My love for Africa was informed by romantic ideas about the continent as a home awaiting my arrival. Filming in Ghana, forms part of this journey.”-Akosua Adoma Owusu
Remember, you are powerful and well capable of doing what ever it is that you want. Take this well achieved African American woman who is doing great things, and be inspired to find what makes you happy but also what can help you impact the world. We need more beautiful black people who want to make the world a better place instead of those who are without purpose.
Peace friends and know that you are loved.
